What Is Excellence?

What Is Excellence?

Excellence is being good at a good thing. It means that you strive to be the best you can be and to do the best you can do.

Excellence reflects moral virtue and therefore strives toward what is positive, valuable, and praiseworthy. The pursuit of excellence is ultimately to honor the Lord since we know that we are accountable to God who judges righteously. The Apostle Paul wrote,

Therefore we … have as our ambition … to be pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. (2 Corinthians 5:9–10)

Seek to do good things well to make a positive difference in your own life and in the lives of those about you. Aim for quality, goodness, and victory, then enjoy small successes and triumphs along the way.

Be Strategic

How good is good enough? When striving to change yourself, don’t settle for less than you can achieve. But take care not to wear yourself out by grasping for those last few bits of progress.

Activity does not produce excellence unless that activity leads to success.

No one is going to be perfect in this world. So don’t frustrate yourself and others by holding out for flawlessness. Be strategic in your actions and focus your effort on the things that lead to the largest gains. A multitude of activity does not produce excellence unless that activity leads to success. Apply continual effort and look for progress.

Expect mistakes and failures along the way, but learn from them and keep moving forward. Evaluate and refine your process and increase your skill. Strive to do better next time and the times after that. Excellence comes through gradual, steady improvement. Commit to learn and to grow for the rest of your life.

Excellence flows from consistent performance over time.

Persevere

Excellence flows from consistent performance over time. It is rarely gained by a single action but rather through a succession of positive attitudes and actions.

Press on to obtain what you have committed to achieving. Legendary coach John Wooden said, “It takes time to create excellence. If it could be done quickly, more people would do it.”

Be extraordinary by doing what it takes to succeed. Do not settle for less than the best that you can be and do. Find fulfillment, satisfaction, and delight by pursuing and attaining excellence.
